Hilton Head vacation rentalsIf you’re visiting the South Carolina Lowcountry from “off” (that’s a Southern term, meaning you don’t live on the island), you probably want to get your fill of fresh seafood while you’re here, right? You’re in luck, because in addition to the wonderful restaurants that populate the island and surrounding areas year-round, the fifth annual Hilton Head Island Seafood Fest will be held April 28, 2012.

The festival kicks off Friday evening from 5-8 p.m. with live entertainment from Cranford & Sons. The main event will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Shelter Cove Community Park with local restaurants serving their seafood specialties. Live entertainment will be provided by The Headliners.

Area restaurants participating in the festival include: Black Marlin, Bluffton Oyster, The Chart House, The Crazy Crab, L’ Woods, Hudson’s on the Docks, The Wreck of the Salty Dog, Street Meet American Tavern and more.

In addition, there will also be a Farmer’s Market, a Kid Zone and an Iron Chef competition.

Local chefs will be presented with identical “mystery baskets” containing various ingredients, including two core local seafood ingredients. The chefs will be given one hour to create an appetizer and an entrée, both of which will be judged by a panel on creativity, composition, taste, and presentation.

Ron Andrews, president of the Low Country Chapter of the American Culinary Federation, who has competed in numerous Iron Chef competitions, will serve as one of the event judges.

Indoor Playground Offers Rainy Day Hilton Head Fun

Hilton Head vacation rentalsYou know what they say, “April showers bring May flowers.” Sometimes rain is the perfect weather when you’re on vacation because it forces you to relax, curl up with a good book or take a nice nap. But if you have young children with you on vacation, waiting out the rain can make them a little antsy.

If you happen to see a bit of the wet stuff while visiting Hilton Head Island, consider taking your kids to the Island Playground. Located on Fording Road, Island Playground is an indoor playground featuring comfortable, clean and safe play areas.

It has giant inflatable jumpers featuring slides and winding obstacle courses, and a separate toddler area with smaller equipment. It also has several “imagination stations” including a fairytale castle, a costume corner, a dino-dig and a supermarket.

Parents can enjoy comfortable seating areas that offer a full view of children playing, as well as free Wi-fi, plasma TV and plenty of current magazines and newspapers.

When the kids are ready to take a break, there’s a large picnic area where your entire group can enjoy an assortment of refreshments from the snack counter.

Island Playground offers Open Play seven days a week, as well as special events including Karaoke Night and Tween Dance Parties.

RBC Heritage Golf Tournament Tees off April 9-15, 2012

Hilton Head vacation rentalsForgive us while we drop a few names, but there’s a certain PGA Hilton Head golf tournament that has called our lovely island home for the last 43 years and that has attracted legendary golfers such as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods and Greg Norman.

The tournament is the RBC Heritage and this year’s event will be held April 9-15, right after the Master’s. Formerly known as the Heritage Classic, the event has been held for more than four decades at Harbour Town Golf Links, which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and boasts “a par-4 18th hole considered one of the most feared in all of golf, particularly when the wind is blowing off Calibogue Sound.”

Tickets are currently available for the tournament and range from $50 for a one day ticket to $190 for access to the tournament grounds for all seven days of the event and admission to the clubhouse.

The tournament began in 1969 at the suggestion of the late Charles Frasier, who developed Sea Pines. The event was started to help raise awareness for Hilton Head Island and Harbour Town Golf Links, a new golf course designed by course architect Pete Dye with assistance from legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus.

Here’s a link to the list of players for this year’s tournament, one of whom will walk away with the tournament’s signature red tartan jacket.

Fly on Over to Hilton Head’s Wingfest

Hilton Head vacation rentalsDo you love to eat wings? Then you’ll be in heaven the upcoming Wingfest March 24 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Shelter Cove Park. Wingfest is a popular annual event for locals and visitors to Hilton Head alike.

As one of the island’s largest festivals, Wingfest is a family-friendly event featuring music, activities for kids, frosty beverages, and of course, plenty o’ wings. The range of wings and sauces you’ll be able to taste at the event range from “super hot to “fancy-schmancy fit for a French restaurant.”

Last year, more than 14 restaurants served wings at the festival and competed in a contest for the best wings on the island. Last year’s winners included the Brew Pub, One Hot Mama’s and The Westin.

Basketball fans need not worry that by attending the event they’ll miss some March Madness action. Organizers always set up lots of TVs so basketball fans can catch all the action on the court.

Admission is just $5 and children 12 and younger are free. Food is sold separately. All proceeds benefit the Hilton Head Island Recreation Association Children’s Scholarship Fund.

And, just when we thought this annual event couldn’t get any better, organizers have added a special PreWingfest party from 5-8 p.m. March 23 at Shelter Cove Park. There will be live music by the ODC Band.
